My Detroit Sports: #MyRedWings Weekly #4

Wrapping up the holiday season and 2017, the Red Wings concluded their road trip with a 3-1 loss Wednesday in New Jersey. However, back at LCA they picked up two thrilling wins against the Rangers and defending champion, Penguins. In a transitional 2017, Detroit will look to turn their luck around in 2018.

Nico Hischier would get New Jersey on the board with 2 goals late in the 1st period; a deflection off of a shot by Steven Santini and another goal 3 minutes later. Justin Abdelkader would respond with a goal in the 2nd period, but it wouldn’t be enough as Devils’ Sami Vatanen sealed the win with an open-netter for New Jersey.

Defense was key for the Devils as Cory Schneider was almost perfect at goal, going 31 for 32 in save opportunities.

Friday night back at Little Caesars Arena, a hard fought battle between the Wings and Rangers didn’t let up, forcing overtime. Andreas Athanasiou and the Captain, Henrik Zetterberg would score a goal each in regulation.

Forcing a shootout, Red Wings’ Jimmy Howard went up against one of the very best, in Rangers’ Henrik Lundqvist. Howard would record 37 saves for the night and Frans Nielsen would win it for the Wings, scoring the lone goal in OT. This was Nielsen’s 21st shootout-deciding goal of his career. The most in NHL history.

Sunday night was huge night for the Red Wings and fans. Not only was it New Year’s Eve at LCA, but the defending champs were in town. It’s been a tough year for the Pens, who sit near the bottom of the Metropolitan Division. Detroit proved to be too tough of a task for the Penguins, as the Wings downed the champs, 4-1.

Larkin and Nielsen got on the board with a goal each, but the star of the game was Gustav Nyquist, who scored once in the 1st and another goal in the 3rd. His second goal of the night was also his 100th for his career.

Jimmy Howard was superb, holding the Penguins to just one goal and 37 saves to ring in the New Year. The Wings next game when Ottawa comes to town, Wednesday. The puck drops at 7:30 PM.
