My Detroit Sports: #MyRedWings Weekly #5

First off, we’d like to congratulate Mike Green on being selected to the 2018 NHL All-Star Game in Tampa Bay!

The Wings hosted the Ottawa Senators Wednesday night. The 3rd game into their 5-game home stand. Riding high from their 4-1 win over the defending champion, Penguins on New Year’s Eve, Detroit took an early 1-0 lead into the 3rd period versus Ottawa. Credit the goal to Andreas Athanasiou. Detroit looked to have the upper hand until careless puck-handling led to Ryan Dzingel tying the game early into the 3rd to send the game into overtime. OT wouldn’t last long. All it took was 6 seconds for the Wings to seal the game with another Athanasiou goal. Jimmy Howard would finish the night with 33 saves.

Back again at LCA, Detroit hosted the Florida Panthers and back again, Andreas Athanasiou opened the game, 42 seconds in, with a goal. Tomas Tatar would add to the lead, scoring his 11th goal of the season. Panthers would respond with 2 goals of their own from Mike Matheson and Aleksander Barkov. The tie wouldn’t last long, as Martin Frk gave the unintentional assist to Anthony Mantha to give Detroit the lead in the 3rd period. After that Nyquist and the Wings would pull away with a 4-2 win over the Panthers.

Jimmy Howard recorded 38 saves. Mike Green had 2 assists, but it was the Captain, Henrik Zetterberg who would come away with a huge assist of his own. He recorded his 600th of his career.

To end their home stand, Detroit took on Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday. Right out of the gate, Yanni Gourde and the Bolts proved to be too much for the Wings, winning 5-2 to snap the Red Wings 4-game winning streak. Nyquist and Abdelkader would score a goal each in the loss. Gourde scored twice in the win. Dan Girardi, Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov would score as well, for the Lightning.

Giving Jimmy Howard the night off, Petr Mrazek allowed all 5 goals, going 19-24 in save opportunities.

With 5 days off, the Wings head to Pittsburgh and Chicago for back-to-back matinee games before returning to Little Caesars Arena to take on the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. 7:30 start time.
