After defeating them on New Years Eve at LCA, Red Wings didn’t fare well against the defending champions, Pittsburgh Penguins on the road. Detroit managed to bounce back in Chicago only to falter at home versus Dallas and Carolina in this week’s #MyRedWings Weekly.
The stars shine at PPG Paints Arena as Evgeni Malkin and the Pens dispose of the Wings, 4-1 last Saturday. Geno led the way with an assist and 2 goals. Scoring in the 1st and 3rd period. Phil Kessel added a goal and 2 assists in the win. Detroit’s favorite rival, Sidney Crosby chipped in with a goal and an assist. Tristan Jerry dominated with 29 saves.
For Detroit, Justin Abdelkader scored his 8th goal of the season. The Wings lone goal of the night. Jimmy Howard surrendered all 4 goals in the loss.
Concluding their short, 2-game road trip in Chicago, it was Petr Mrazek’s turn at goal and he did not disappoint. He notched his 2nd shutout of the season with 27 saves to help give the Wings the 4-0 win at the United Center.
Four different Wings would score for Detroit; Larkin, Green and Mantha came away with a goal each. Also, Tyler Bertuzzi scored late in the 3rd period to seal the win for the Red Wings and in the process, giving him his first career NHL goal.
The Wings returned home Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena to host the Dallas Stars. Detroit kept it close, as Andreas Athanasiou knotted the game 2-2 in the 2nd period. It wouldn’t take Dallas long to respond when Jason Spezza scored his 2nd goal (power play) of the night to put the Stars ahead. Martin Hanzal would score his 4th goal of the season to give Dallas the win over Detroit.
Trevor Daly scored his 3rd goal of the season for Detroit. Jimmy Howard has given up 4 goals in back-to-back starts.
Detroit wouldn’t struggle again at home this Saturday as the Wings welcomed the Canes. Elias Lindholm proved to be too much for the Red Wings, scoring 2 power play goals in the 1st and 3rd period. Justin Williams scored, as well. Cam Ward recorded 23 saves. Justin Faulk added 2 assists in the win.
Tomas Tatar would Detroit’s only goal in the loss to Carolina. Jimmy Howard struggling, again, giving up 3 goals.
The Wings look to bounce back with one more road game in New Jersey tomorrow and 2 more home games before the All-Star break.
