My Detroit Sports: My Lions Report #3 (End of the Season)

It’s “Big Game” Sunday and Tom Brady hoists up the Vince Lombardi trophy. His 6th of his career. As sure as you can be about the New England Patriots being in or winning the Super Bowl, the same can be said about the Detroit Lions having another disappointing season.

The trade of beloved WR, Golden Tate signaled the Lions throwing in the towel for the 2018 season. Matthew Stafford, who earns a whopping $27 million dollars annually, struggling and a rookie coach showing up late to team meetings certainly added fuel to the fire. Detroit Lions ended their season at 6-10, that culminated in parting ways with OC Jim Bob Cooter.

While most fans agree that a rebuild is inevitable, tanking has never been in the cards for the Lions. Ask a roster that’s out there earning a living playing this dangerous game if they want to be the laughing stock of the NFL and tank. Ask a 10-year vet like Glover Quin if he wants to tank. Ask 2-time Pro Bowler, Darius Slay if he wants to tank. It’s a hard no.

Towards the end of the season, the Lions put up a valiant effort, post-Tate trade against eventual division winners, Chicago Bears in Week 12, losing, 23-16 (Recap). Another great effort against NFC Champions, Los Angeles Rams in Week 13, losing 30-16 (Recap).

Detroit’s MVP of the season, provided another BIG PLAY in an otherwise, lackluster game. Darius Slay came up with the 3rd quarter, pick-6 for his first career touchdown in the Lions road win over Arizona, 17-3 in Week 14 (Recap). Josh Allen stopped the Lions momentum in Week 15 (Recap) with a 42-yard touchdown to Robert Foster in the 4th quarter over Detroit, 14-13. Followed up by a debilitating 27-9, home loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 16 (Recap).

The Lions ended the 2018 season with a hollow 31-0 win (Recap) at Lambeau against the Green Bay Packers. Some took pride that it was against the Packers, but in the end, the rout meant absolutely nothing. Both Detroit and Green Bay were going home.

Detroit’s bright spots: Jarrad Davis and Devon Kennard became the first set of Lions LB to record 6+ sacks on the season. TJ Jones had 2 touchdowns in the win.

Oh, and there was this:

While the season wasn’t ideal, we continue to see growth in Pro Bowler, Darius Slay. Don Muhlbach also joined Slay in Orlando.

Detroit has the 8th pick in the NFL Draft and several roster spots to fill. Here’s to the fast approaching 2019 season. Go Lions!

UPDATE: Detroit cut ties with one of it’s most beloved players in Glover Quin. On behalf of My Detroit Sports and Detroit sports fans everywhere, we say, “Thank you, Glover”.

My Detroit Sports: My Lions Report #2

It’s been an interesting and underwhelming Lions season to say the least. Detroit entered the much-needed Bye week, 2-3, with their wins coming against New England and Green Bay. After Week 5, if you feel like you’ve entered the ‘twilight zone’, you’re not alone.

The Lions entered Hard Rock Stadium, in Miami, Florida to a 89-degree contest against the Dolphins. Right out of the gate, Detroit was firing on all cylinders. Matthew Stafford connected with Michael Roberts for the 15-yard touchdown. Kerryon Johnson continues to impress in his rookie campaign, rushing for 71 yards to put Matt Prater within field goal range, adding 3. LeGarret Blount added with TD of his own, to put the Lions up, 17-7, at the half.

The 2nd half, provided a little deja vu, as Stafford connected with Michael Roberts, again,  with the shotgun touchdown for 4 yards. Prater provided 3 more field goals, including a 50-yarder to seal the win for the Lions. Kerryon would rush for 158 yards.

WEEK 7: Recap

The win in Miami, would be the Lions last attempt to turn their season around, as they dropped the next 3 against Seattle at home and division rivals, Minnesota, Chicago on the road.

Despite the 28-14 loss, Detroit added 3 more players to the “Pride of Detroit”, Herman Moore, Roger Brown and Alex Karras in a special halftime ceremony against Seattle.

WEEK 8: Recap

Following the loss, another big blow would come to the Lions faithful, this time in the form of a trade. Detroit traded impending free agent, Golden Tate to the defending champions, Philadelphia Eagles.

The Lions couldn’t bounce back, getting manhandled by the Vikings 24-9.

WEEK 9: Recap

Week 10, was a case of too little too late for Detroit. Falling 26-7 at the half. Stafford’s 3 touchdowns to Kerryon Johnson (2) and Marvin Jones wasn’t enough to mount the comeback against Chicago.

WEEK 10: Recap

Prior to their match-up against the Carolina Panthers, Matt Prater and Sam Martin were in the giving spirit for the holidays, giving away 100 turkey dinners to those in need.

Week 11, was a grit and grind that Lions fans have been clamoring for all season. Kerryon Johnson had an early touchdown in the first quarter, holding the game to 7-all after the 1st.

Devon Kennard and Ziggy Ansah chipped in the defense with a sack each. Matt Prater added a 54-yard field goal to give the Lions their first lead of the half. Prater extended the lead with another field goal (32 yards) in the 3rd quarter, but Carolina would go back and forth with Detroit in the 4th.

The Panthers would tie the game up with Cam Newton connecting with Curtis Samuel for the 12-yard touchdown, 13-13. Graham Gano’s extra point attempt, no good. The tie would be short-lived as Matthew Stafford found Marvin Jones for the 19-yard touchdown giving the lead back to the Lions, 20-13.

Cam Newton and the Panthers made things interesting with a touchdown to DJ Moore for 8 yards, bringing the Panthers within a point to tie, 2 to win. Carolina opted for the 2-point conversion attempt. That’s all it would be is an ATTEMPT, as the Lions grinded out a much-needed win.

WEEK 11: Recap

When the Lions win, you win, here at My Detroit Sports and we’ve chosen Sandy Lloyd as our winner of a Golden Tate autographed photo! Since Tate is no longer with the team, she was sent an additional signed photo by linebacker, Jarrad Davis! All that, just for showing her pride for the Detroit Lions. Stay tuned for our final giveaway of the season!
